Living on the Vern

Though I have always lived on Foggy Bottom, all of my roommates lived on the Mt. Vernon Campus in Somers Hall last year as part of the Women’s Leadership Program. It is a program really worth applying for (if you are a woman, of course) as they seem to have created such a great tight knit community together that it hard to find right away during the college transition.

My roommate this year, Annie S., thinks the Vern is “really pretty during fall and spring. Sitting by the fountain is one of the most relaxing aspects of living on the Vern.” With the new upgrades of West Hall and Pelham Commons, Annie notes that, “it is nice that there are more people living up there though it is sad that Somers (her old dorm) is so far from the cafeteria now.” She recommends the red chairs on the second floor of Eckles Library. Another one of my roommates Jane also says, “the upgrades are surprisingly nice. I toured West Hall and it’s the best freshman dorm on campus.”

Jane also reminisced on last winter when we had a week off snow that was dehabilitating to our campus. “The 400+ people living on the Vern playing in the quad and had a massive snowball fight. Someone tried to throw me into the fountain.” Epic.
The stairs to West Hall make a perfect sledding hill
Event coming up tomorrow on the Vern: Take the ride connecting GW to its roots! Grab your bike (or borrow one from us) and ride the 22 miles from GW's Mount Vernon Campus to the historic Mount Vernon Estate in Virginia. My house proctor is participating and it should be really fun.
