Question from a Reader!

Hi everyone! I just got a question from an accepted student, Lauryn, who was wondering: "I was wondering what professional sororities there are and if I want to rush in the fall, should I sign up at CI? Also, what is the rush process like for professional sororities? How is it different from social sorority rush? How are professional sororities different from social sororities?"

There are a ton of professional sororities and frats (co-ed) on campus that you can check out and they will definitely be at the student org fair at CI! You can check out a list of examples on my blog post here. You can also check out the Professional, Honor, and Service Greek Council's facebook info page to see a list.

The rush process varies for each one but they are not as intense as social sororities and usually just involve doing things associated with the certain focus (for example, community service orgs want to see you doing comm serv events, etc). Also, you only rush one professional sorority/fraternity and may not get in while social sorority rush, you are likely to get a bid from one of the sororities because you are rushing them all at once. Social sorority rush is usually a week long in the fall (every night) while professional sororities vary and rush for fall and spring.

Professional sororities focus more on career development and I have found personally that the girls involved are very motivated and academically oriented in the best way possible. There are still tons of social events without that being the only focus. I recommend them but also have friends in regular Greek life that love it because of the great networks of people on campus, as around 25% of the campus is in a social Greek organization.

I love getting emails from people so please keep them coming! marisaw@gwmail.gwu.edu
