Prepping for Battle

My a capella group is gearing up for one of the biggest nights at GW, Battle of the A capellas on April 20th. Every year around this time all the a capella compete against each other for awards and more importantly, bragging rights. My group, The GW Troubadours, participates every year, along with the GW Vibes, Sons of Pitch, Emocapella, Sirens, Pitches, and this year, The Voice. And it can get really intense. But enough a capella speak...here are the rules:

1) Sing 3 awesome songs

2) Sing a challenge song in an original style (every year Class Council chooses a song they see as representative of the last year in music and every a capella groups has to do a rendition of it...In the past they've chosen Rehab and Sexy Back)

3) Be awesome. No excuses

This year the judges for the competition are going to be from the Kennedy Center so it's going to be really exciting AND my group has some great new songs planned for Battle. I would tell you what they are, but who knows what a capella groups might be studying/infiltrating the blog as we speak...looking for secrets.

My group, The GW Troubadours, is the oldest (and awesomest) a capella group on campus. One of the things that separates us from the other a capella groups is the fact that we're part of the Music Department, which has its perks, like every other year our group goes on tour with the University Singers (last year we went to South Africa!!!). We do all kinds of music from Pop to Rock to R&B to Jazz to whatever random song/genre our group members seem to like. We do a little Michael Jackson, Ingrid Michaelson, Radiohead, John Legend, Manhattan Transfer, Aquabats, and Lady Gaga if that gives you a clear picture. We arrange all our own music. We make you want to be us, basically.

The great thing about being in a group like this is that you really get close with everyone in the group, and a capella is one of the best ways to perform regularly at GW. We perform everywhere from on-campus at events for student groups, off-campus for various GW events, and we also do professional gigs which we use to raise money to record a CD every year. We're all over youtube and we have a facebook fanpage so check us out if you get a chance or are interested in music at GW.

**To get my gameface on for Battle, I've watched the movie 300 several times, and I'm working on my battle cry. Ladies and gentlemen, this is serious.

My power quote as we get closer to Battle:

"Well, that's an easy choice for us, Arcadian! Spartans never retreat! Spartans never surrender! Go spread the word. Let every Greek assembled know the truth of this. Let each among them search his own soul. And while you're at it, search your own."- King Leonidas
