A Perfect "Reading Day"

Hi everyone!

I just wanted to describe to you how great reading days are. After classes end, GW usually has one or two reading days that provide time for students to relax, recuperate, and get ready to attack our final exams. I had one exam in my last class this past Monday, and two take home exams, so I only have 2 in-class finals to go. While these exams will both be hard, this semester will be much more manageable in terms of finals solely because I have 3 out of the way!

But back to Reading Days... GW really pulls out the bells and whistles to make sure people are relaxed, well fed, and getting outside! Even though I had a study room reservation in the library from 12 PM to 6 PM yesterday (students can reserve library rooms together- each student can reserve a 2 hour block), I still managed to take advantage of great things going on around campus:

- The Love Is Louder Block party is a movement that was started to remind us that 1 in 4 people have a mental illness, and to remind them that they are not alone in struggling with disease. It was started by Brittany Snow and MTV after several students around the country committed suicide in September 2010. The Block Party had cupcakes, a place to throw paint at canvas, lots of booths to help students talk about these issues, and pizza.

- My economics professor hosted a large office hours session where he went over students' problems as a group. I benefited from this experience and went to listen to more review for our exam.

- The GW Gelman Library is being renovated starting this summer to have an amazing entryway and new study space. Cafe Gelman is hosted every month with free snacks for students, and they amped it up during our reading day yesterday to allow us to have some expresso drinks prepared by local baristas, great snacks like chips, bananas, and granola bars, as well as some free travel mugs that are really nice. I'm glad I stopped by!

Hope everyone is enjoying the sun/the heat.. I for one am not wanting it to get any more humid! Why did I decide to stay in DC this summer?! :)

Hello again!

Hi everyone,

It's been awhile since I've updated you guys!

I just went to the FRESHFARM farmer's market behind the Foggy Bottom Metro stop on Wednesday, after a review session for a final exam. I have been constantly impressed with the variety of foods that are available from such a small amount of vendors (there are around 12 booths, and it covers just a small area of campus). While Whole Foods tries to source sustainable and local foods, this farmers market an even better option as the foods have been literally driven to the market by the farmers themselves and you can talk to them about their produce!

This week, I walked away with the best goodies. I finally decided to try Atwater's selection of whole wheat breads. I also picked up some of my favorite apple cider and some eggs.
Atwater's "Sunflower Flax" bread
Cage free and speckled eggs
Quaker Valley Orchards apple cider
Overall, it was a great shopping atmosphere even though it was a little cold out. I love going to the farmers market because you are able to sample all of the produce and the yummy things they have- from salsa to soups to cider to baked goods! You can go hungry- something that I don't recommend doing in a normal grocery store : )

Hope everyone is ready for Friday to come and go- I definitely am ready for the weekend!

Cab Doz Getaway

So if you haven't noticed, I've come from underneath my rock and you'll be hearing from me a lot  over the next couple of days as I avoid studying (:

Over this past weekend, I was kidnapped by my Colonial Cabinet fam (just kidding!). But all of the Colonial Inauguration staff (Colonial Cabinet and CI Staffers) went on a spring retreat/leadership getaway over the weekend. Although I can’t really say much about the retreat because its a surprise and a little bit on the down low, I can say it was an awesome bonding experience and although we left tired and smelly, we came back on Sunday loving each other more than we did when we left.

Despite the fact that our more time intensive job commitments begin this summer, throughout the second semester we have weekly trainings, office hour commitments, and other events we have to attend including basketball games, April visit days for prospective students, and two retreats. We had our winter retreat towards the beginning of the spring semester and in past years this retreat is usually held the last weekend in the semester. But, because of some changes in schedule, we had it a bit earlier this year.

Spring Retreat (:

At our winter retreat!

Chilling during GW's Spring Fling

Buff Out Basketball Game

Stuck together in a random elevator lol

With two trainings left in the semester and one more week of office hours, my cab fam and I  are getting ready to meet all the amazing incoming students. As a result of our overwhelming excitement for the summer, we have given ourselves the name “Cab Doz” which you may often hear us drop from time to time.

If you are a prospective student-- GET READY!! This summer/fall is going to be exciting and fun but be sure to register for CI! I may have briefly mentioned it in an earlier post but once you register for CI you will be placed in a small group. Each Cab member is a small group leader. We will be there to make sure everything runs smoothly for you, and to also answer any and all questions you may have. The faster you register, the faster you hear from us, and get some Cab Doz lovin (:

Until next time: if you have any questions, comments or just want to chat-- always remember I am only an email away! anstone@gwmail.gwu.edu

Food Trucks: District of Pi

On Friday the District of Pi pizza truck was sitting in front of Gelman library, just beckoning to me.  I’ve been wanting to try their deep-dish for AGES AND AGES, but something always barred my access.  Be it lack of cash, time management, or the fact that I had recently eaten and I’m not that much of a glutton, but I hadn’t had District of Pi yet.  They have a restaurant in Penn Quarter as well, but when I’m out that way I usually have a destination already.

So it had to be, Friday was the day.  I had also failed to eat breakfast, so like ice cream the day before, this was a sign from the gods that I needed to indulge.  Or I’m shamelessly using coincidence to allow myself to over-eat like a pre-teen whose parents went away for a long weekend.  We’ll go with the former…

So I got the “Just Cheese”—yeah, I’m not helping my case, but it was the only meatless one I saw on the menu that day!  It took 9 minutes to cook up, but I just chilled outside Gelman and returned a phone call; it was nice out so I didn’t mind a bit.  My food was ready in just that time and I raced home to eat it.  By that time it had cooled just enough to chow down, and I was thrilled with the product.  I’ll never say deep dish is better than New York style, or even comparable to—it’s a different animal entirely.  However, this was thoroughly satisfying and all-around delicious.  Tomato sauce on top is an interesting concept, and I’m definitely into the chunky tomato-y sauce rather than a puree.  Overall a definite lunchtime success.

Still reading?  Good for you.  You obviously care enough about GW or DC or my culinary adventures.  So write me about it!  shireens@gwmail.gwu.edu

Food Trucks: Ice cream!

On Thursday my friend and I decided to bask in the lovely weather and were really keen on the idea of enjoying some ice cream outside.  Little did we know The Orange Cow ice cream truck was right on campus!  It was a deus ex machina of dairy confections, we had to submit to the will of the universe.

It wasn’t tough to pick a flavor, one of the specials of the day was Coffee-Oreo.  It rocked my world.  I’m always a fan of cookies & cream flavor, but the coffee ice cream added some fantastic umph to the traditional.  And it was loaded with cookies too, which was awesome.  It’s a bit of a pet peeve of mine when a flavor claims to be cookies & cream but there’s barely any cookie.  This hit the mark.

So we sat out in the loveliness and began our weekend in delicious, creamy style.  Orange Cow gets an A+!!!

Spring Fling!

Yesterday GW had it's annual "Spring Fling".  To celebrate spring and beautiful weather and the last blissful days before finals, GW Program Board puts on an awesome concert and hosts all sorts of activities throughout the day to entertain us and give us an excuse to procrastinate homework.

This year's guest was my favorite yet, and fitting for my last Spring Fling.  We had CHILDISH GAMBINO!  If you don't know him, go take a listen.  I'll be here when you get back.

...

Cool, right?  Yeah, he's pretty great.  Very witty and clever with the lyrics, but not sacrificing on good beats and musicality.  His real name is Donald Glover; you may know him as Troy on NBC's Community.  He also wrote for 30 Rock for a while--my favorite show.  Allow me to get inside baseball for a second: *HE* is the true voice behind "Werewolf Bar Mitzvah", not Tracy Morgan!  Google it.

So everyone congregated in the Smith Center (our basketball/big event auditorium) for an amazing concert last night at 7, and it was definitely as good as I expected.  Probably better, actually--I didn't expect everyone to know the lyrics as well as they did, it's great when you're all collectively singing along.  He even freestyled about GW and DC during the encore, and it's always nice to get a shout-out!  It was just fantastic fun.  I re-fell in love with his musical stylings.

Above are pictures my friend took from the concert--I didn't feel like busting out the camera, too busy dancing and getting crushed by people who were virtually moshing everywhere.  Was still happy with it, though!

As usual, email with questions and comments about GW or whatever.  shireens@gwmail.gwu.edu

Food Trucks: SOL Mexican Grill

Some days you just can't continue on without guacamole.  Today was one of those days.  As luck would have it, the (baby) SOL truck was on campus!  It was thus necessary for my friend Molly and I to check it out.

SOL Mexican Grill is a little bitty food truck that comes by and delivers pretty fantastic tacos and other Mexican fare for your pleasure.  The food is prepared right in front of you, which is a nice change of pace for a frequent food trucker like myself, and I got to have everything I wanted and exactly how much I wanted on my veggie tacos.

I should have asked for more guac, though.  Should have ordered a guacamole taco (not a real thing...)  The other ingredients are the real condiments.

The baby SOL truck next to mama SOL
SOL Menu
Rating: A.  I'll try all the other amazing taco trucks before returning, but I'd certainly go back.  I also got this interesting orange drink that I liked but also kinda tasted like orange-flavor Listerine.  But in a good way, if that makes sense!

Off to the Market!

I've always loved the Foggy Bottom Farmer's Market, chock-full of locally-sourced goodies  every Wednesday afternoon from 3 to 7pm.  It's one of the joys of living in a city and living in Foggy Bottom, if you ask me.  But it's tough when I'm strapped for cash or just not carrying any--a lot of times I leave home only with my Gworld card, keys, and my phone--I always kicked myself when the market was around and I couldn't shop due to lack of funds!

But now, the market takes GWORLD!  That's the card we use to tap into our buildings and pay for things on campus, and now it'll be accepted at the market!  It's coming a bit late for me, but I'm still excited for the little use I'll be able to get out of it the rest of this semester!  Not only is it super convenient because I won't have to carry change, it'll also be a great way to spend Gworld money rather than on my go-to lunch spots... I gotta add some variety to my diet!  Plus it's certainly healthier and better for the community, too!

And now, since it's Wednesday afternoon, I'm going to buy some orange blossom honey or artisan bread or something awesome.  Ciao!

As always, email with questions about GW, DC, or organic eating (not really that last one). shireens@gwmail.gwu.edu

Food Trucks: Cheesecake!

Today, my buddy and I had quite the sweet tooth (teeth?) and decided to submit to our cravings with some cheesecake from a truck!  It was fabulous.  Simply divine.  Re-defined food from a truck.

We hopped on over to one of the quads on campus, Kogan Plaza, where "That Cheesecake Truck" (aka Sweetz Cheesecake) was parked.  I got the blueberry swirl and she got cookies & cream, and we split them because that's what friends are for.

Kogan Plaza
The Sweetz Truck
Sweetz is great because they're one of the trucks that takes credit/debit, and they text your receipt to your phone, which is cool.  Also, they sell individual cheesecakes as well as whole cakes that serve a bunch of people.  And the flavors are amazing!  Along with the ones we tried, they had Black Forest and White Chocolate Raspberry which caught my eye.  I'm definitely going to have to recruit more people to share cakes with one day so I can try more flavors!  Definitely worth a repeat offense.

If you have any questions on GW/DC stuff, email me!  shireens@gwmail.gwu.edu

Wassup Current (and Future) Colonials!

My name is Alyse Stone! I am a sophomore Mechanical Engineering major in the School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS).

Although born and raised in New York, I rep Los Angeles and frequently identify myself as a California beach girl since I attended high school there. On campus, I am an engineering mentor, formally known as SEAS Student Peer Advisory Network (SEASSPAN) and live in the sophomore SEAS living community. I attend the Engineering Council meetings, I am a Colonial Cabinet member, and I work in the undergraduate engineering office as a personal assistant to the advising staff, tour guide, and receptionist. Off campus, I am a Jackie Robinson Foundation scholar, and I am sponsored by and intern at the Northrop Grumman Corporation. I guess you could say I like to keep myself busy.

Although my schedule is a lot of times, jam-packed, this week acceptance letters went out to the Class of 2016. (Congratulations by the way!) So, at the beginning of the week, we had an Engineering Open House so prospective students would have the opportunity to meet faculty members and current students. As a staff member of office and an engineering mentor, that is one of our major events for the school year. In addition to the open house, the Colonial Inauguration website went live. http://ci.gwu.edu/students/

2012 Colonial Cabinet Members
For all you prospective and recently admitted students out there, the Colonial Inauguration Program (CI) is GWU’s orientation program for incoming students. That student can be a freshman, a transfer, or an international student. There are four different orientation sessions during the summer that are designed specifically for incoming freshman students, and then there is a fall session in August specifically for incoming transfer and international students. My job as a Colonial Cabinet Member is to run the orientation program (along with other CI staff), and mentor incoming students to assure their transition to GW runs smoothly. Definitely check out the website as it gives more specific details about the programs, students and faculty involved, and other pertinent information. Each colonial cabinet member also has a video that is designed to introduce, what we felt, were important aspects of the university that should be highlighted. I know that my position for CI is definitely going to be the highlight of my summer and school year. (I am so excited for it!) For all of you declared 2016‘ers, I am so looking forward to meeting you!

Just a quick hello!

My name is Amy and I’m a sophomore in the School of Business concentrating in International Business.  I’m originally from Milwaukee, Wisconsin.  At GW I am involved with the District Youth Empowerment Program as well as various volunteer opportunities offered throughout campus.  The District Youth Empowerment Program (DYEP) tutors at an elementary school in the area as well as The School without Walls, a high school located on campus.  We also host events on campus and bring some of the elementary school kids we tutor to campus.  I also live with a group of sophomores who are all in the Business School.

This weekend, GW hosted The Clinton Global Initiative University.  The Clinton Global Initiative is an organization the President Clinton started after he left office.  It began with world leaders coming together and promising to make the world a better place by the same time next year.  If they didn’t, they weren’t invited back to the following year’s conference.  This program had such an amazing result President Clinton started a version of his initiative at a college level.  Each year it is hosted at a different university.  Throughout Friday and Saturday students from all 50 states and many countries worldwide were on campus talking about their plans to make the world a better place and talking to people in similar field to make their ideas even better.  There were four large discussions that all guests of the program were invited to attend.  I worked at all of these events.  On Friday night all 250 volunteers were invited to take a group picture with President Clinton.  I was lucky enough to sit one person away from him!  I promise to post a picture once I have a copy of it!

The best thing to me about GW is the wide array of events they host and all of the opportunities available as students.  There is always something going on and by getting involved there is so much to learn… and it’s a lot of fun too!

Until next time.

Food Trucks: TaKorean!

I’ve been fairly inactive on the blog lately, largely because I am being a vegan for lent, and not many of the food trucks have vegan options.  Food trucking is basically all I do with my life that’s interesting outside of school and my extra-curriculars.  So that put a damper on things!

However, I’ve found a saving grace in TaKorean, a very popular Korean BBQ taco truck that I’ve been wanting to visit for AGES.  I heard that their vegan Tofu Takos were outrageous, and made tofu delicious as opposed to the usual ‘eh’ reaction it receives.  I had to investigate.

I got the Tofu bowl with “Napa-Romaine” slaw, and it was really fantastic.  The tofu was sweet and spicy, and firm enough that it didn’t just disintegrate like it sometimes does.  The slaw was tangy and fresh, and I love fresh cilantro, so that added a nice compliment.  Very pleased with my choice, I will most certainly return!

They also have a tangy chicken Tako and Bulgogi beef Takos, which come with a variety of toppings and their slaws.  Here’s a picture of their wares:

Looks good, no?  Yes.  Yes it does.

So when you make your visit to GW, stop by TaKorean of any of our other fabulous DC food trucks!

George's Birthday Bash!

Hi everyone!

Finally- the event I've always wanted to go: George Washington's birthday celebration in U Yard! I wish I had better pictures but I had my friend take a few pictures on her phone. This celebration happens every year- they make a huge bonfire in the middle of U Yard and roast marshmallows, have hot apple cider, and just hang out. I was on my way to a professional speaking event and it was a nice surprise to leave U Yard with a big cup of apple cider.
Bonfire
Band performing
Overall, it was a really nice get together for lots of students, administrators, and faculty on campus. I was surprised at how many people came out to celebrate! Thankfully, it was also a pretty warm night. We've been lucky with the weather lately- it's a great time to come visit campus (hint hint!).

Food Trucks: Yellow Vendor

Just visited the Yellow Vendor food truck for lunch with a friend, and I was very happy with the results!

It’s solid, authentic, and not in the least flashy—both in presentation and flavor—but the lack of elegance is made up for (and then some) by the quality and taste.  It was as close to real Korean food as I’ve ever had, save for when my high school friend’s mom made us dinner a few times.  Moving on.

I got the vegetarian bibimbap, which consisted of rice, sautéed carrots, cabbage, bean sprouts, and greens (I think fern?), with an over-easy egg on top.  Very pleased with my choice: it was delicious, filling, and you got a lot of food for your money.  I couldn’t finish it all, which is rather rare with me!

Definitely recommend.  Check ‘em out!

And of course, for GW/DC/college questions, email me! shireens@gwmail.gwu.edu

The Big Job Hunt and GW's resources

Hey folks,

Thought I'd pick up where I left off last time--with a discussion of the specific resources GW offers its students in finding jobs.

As anybody who knows Washington, D.C., can tell you, this is the city of internships. Almost everybody I know has made searching for internships a principal focus of their undergraduate careers. For more on that front, I highly recommend looking through our archives here at the GW Admissions Student Blog--my colleagues have written some great pieces on the diversity of their experiences.

As a second-semester senior, I want to offer a bit of a different perspective: that of a soon-to-be-graduate looking for work. (I also have graduate school applications in, but that's a story for a different post.)

Freshman and parents probably want to know the answers to the following two questions:
1. How well does a GW education prepare you for employment in general?
2. What kind of resources are available to assist the job search itself?

My last post talked more about question #1. From my experiences over the past ten days, I can offer two data points on question #2:

Career Fairs: GW offers two big general-interest career fairs. Our first fair this year was held back in the Fall; our Spring fair just happened on Wednesday, February 1. I attended the Spring fair this year, and I have to say I was really impressed with the breadth of opportunities available. Many employers were looking for students with strong written and verbal communication skills to fill spots immediately, and most were accepting resumes.

I admit it: I'm not going to be designing submarines for this GW Career fair perennial--though many of our outstanding SEAS students do work for outstanding companies like this one.
One comment I frequently hear from my fellow humanities students after job fairs is "What about me?" I have to say, I think this criticism is unfair. It's only natural that a disproportionate number of employers actively hiring will be looking for engineers--technical fields are the country's main growth sectors. This is certainly reflected at our job fairs, but humanities majors need not lose hope: with a little research, you too can discover those hidden opportunities. (More on my personal experiences next time.)

Career Center Workshops: If fairs offer students a shot to impress employers in attendance, workshops give us a better chance of making each shot count. Everything from resume design to interview behavior is covered by our Career Center's staff.

Yesterday, I attended a guest lecture on interview behavior hosted by the Center. Some schools offer similar services, but GW really makes quality career support accessible. I learned a number of tips on how to improve my interview performance, and will definitely be going back for more help next week.

Food Trucks: DC Shawarma (minus the shawarma...)

Today, I stopped by the DC Shawarma truck for some grub!  Not shawarma, mind you, but poutine!  They churn out some of the best poutine I’ve ever had alongside lamb, beef, and chicken shawarma and falafel sandwiches, plus some other sides I didn’t pay too much attention to because I had poutine on the brain!

Now, I’m gonna admit: I don’t think the gravy used in the poutine was vegetarian.  I know Eat Wonky’s poutine is, but theirs tasted like meat gravy (I think, I’ve actually never been the biggest gravy person so I'm no expert!).  I’m gonna live in blissful ignorance on that one—my policy on things like that is don’t ask, don’t tell.  Same with broths.  As you can see, my resolve in that sector is slight, but overall I’m still a veghead!  Or at least, on my way there!

Back to the poutine.  It was tasty, hot, and curdelicious.  There’s something about partially-melted squeaky cheese that’s very comforting, aside from the noise it makes when you eat it.

All in all, good dinner.  Now off to class!  (Yeah, I gotta night class.  UGH.)

Manouch, Part II

There is only one man who consistently keeps GW students coming back to campus after days, weeks, months, and even years away from their college days.  He is known quite simply as Manouch, and he opens his hot dog stand every Thursday to Saturday from about 10pm to 4am by the SMPA building (21st and H).  This weekend, I chatted up a few alumni and plenty of fellow students while on line to get some of the best late-night food DC has to offer.

Upon returning from a night out (or sometimes in the midst of a painful all-nighter at Gelman), students flock to Manouch’s cart to get some salty, smoky, cheesy, and all-around delicious fare.  He makes the absolute best hot dogs, half-smokes, and pretzels—all served up with nacho cheese, chili, or his famous GW Sauce: it’s a stewy concoction with herbs, potatoes, leeks, and possibly kidney beans? It’s actually a version of this Persian stew that I adore (Manouch himself is Persian, though he likes to be cryptic about his origins and life story).

More than the food, however, is the experience of Manouch.  He’s got the wit and charisma of a stand-up comedian, with the intelligence and plethora of experiences that one can only attribute to an esteemed academic.  He offers up advice on love, school, and friendships, whether you ask him or not, and he’s got some of the greatest one-liners.  One of the alum I spoke with on Saturday night (3 years out of GW and still coming back for Manouch!) told me that he once said to her, “Your face tells the story of a woman with many friends and suitors, but no time for homework.”  Another friend of mine had a lengthy conversation with him about time-space compression.

Simple perfection.  And thus goes another tribute to the man who has made my weekends at GW all the merrier.  I’ll likely post a third before I graduate, one to end the trilogy—and it will be packed with quotes.  Just you wait!  In the meantime, however, I implore all of you to pay a visit to the hot dog stand where everybody knows your name.

As always, email with questions! ShireenS@gwmail.gwu.edu

The Spring Swing of Things for Me

This semester is bound to be one of the busiest, but most exciting ones in store for me. I am working on switching majors (yes, AGAIN!) to the School of Media and Public Affairs to study Political Communication. I have never taken a single journalism class so it is tough starting at one of the best journalism schools in the country, but hey, I’m just learning from the best!

Come visit us this spring and summer
and we can't wait for our new students to walk through
these gates
As well, I am working with the Admissions Office and going through training for the VIP (Visitor Information Program) through the Admissions Office to stay here for the entire summer and give tours. As if that weren’t enough, I will be interning for an Austin-based consulting firm. Finally, this is the heat of basketball season and I am busy with Colonial Brass as we cheer on our men and women's team to post season play. It is bound to be a great summer and even more exciting summer as I hope to get to meet more of you since traditionally many of you, like me when I went through the process, view colleges during the summer.

To those of you who applied ED and are anxiously awaiting, hang in there! Decisions will be made soon and should be headed out in the middle of February. For others who applied Regular decision, take this time to breathe after putting in your application and hold on until the middle of March. I wish you the best of luck, be sure to put in your FAFSA (http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/) and CSS Profile (https://profileonline.collegeboard.com/prf/index.jsp)  with the Financial Aid Office, and as always reach out to the Admissions Office or me if you have any questions/concerns. We are always glad to help our perspective Colonials.

Peace, Love and Hippos,

Food Trucks: Fojol Bros. of Benethiopia

So y’all may or may not know of my food truck experiment (I wanna try ‘em all!), and you also may or may not know that I already visited and loved the first Fojol Bros. truck.  Well, breaking news: I tried the 2nd, and love it just as much (actually, maybe more?!!)

Express Night Out voted Fojol Bros. of Merlindia the 3rd best Indian food in DC, which is quite an honor considering all the top-notch restaurants they were up against.  They opened up a new truck pretty recently that specializes in Ethiopian food, and it’s pretty exceptional.  I had the Shiro beef (like a few weeks ago, pre-vegetarianism!) and Berbere lentils served with injera, the spongey Ethiopian bread.  I really, really enjoyed it.  These guys are weird, wacky, and wild, but they make some delicious grub.

Basically, I’m ready to quit school and join the culinary circus that is the Fojol Bros.

(kidding.)
