Howard Schultz, the CEO of Starbucks, came to speak at GW yesterday. It was a really exciting event sponsored by the Entrepreneur's Organization of DC. The event began with a short introduction video about creation of Starbucks and ended with the various progressive changes Schultz has implemented since the Financial Crisis and his return as CEO. It is fascinating to see that the American Dream still exists because Schultz's journey is essentially a rags-to-riches story. Schultz was born in the Brooklyn projects and he eventually decided to move out to Seattle to begin a new life with his wife. He was initially hired as the Director of Marketing for a coffee shop, and it was his trip to Italy where he reached an epiphany that created Starbucks. It is in his Schultz's new book, entitled "Onwards" where we learn about how Schultz turned Starbucks around after the Financial Crisis and the progress he hopes to achieve for the company.
